'You’re so sexy when you aren’t transmitting STD’s’ is a wonderful book by illustrator and author Isabella Rotman. The book gives advice on safer sex for ‘anyone who is having sex, has had sex, or plans on having sex ever.’ It is a book for everyone, but will be of particular interest to young adults and members of the LGBTQ community. And the best way to have safer sex is simple: ‘Keep other peoples bodily fluids out of your body'. It gives this advice using humour, comic illustrations and clear and simple text.
The range of topics covered
and illustrated includes how to use male and female condoms, oral sex, sex toys
(did you know that silicone based lube can break down silicon dildos?), yeast
infections, crabs and lice, keeping yourself healthy, etc. However, what is
most important about the book is the emphasis it places on three issues:
Talking to your partner; getting tested; and above all else that Consent is
Mandatory. Emotional manipulation and sexual harassment are not consensual. It
is not consent if someone is intoxicated, drugged, underaged, mentally incapacitated, or unconscious.
This is a book that all
students (and non-students) should check out. It is a fun, easy and informative
read – though perhaps it may bring a few blushes, particularly if you are
reading it on the 402 bus to NUI Galway. Enjoy!
Check out free copies of the book in the NUI Galway Wellness Centre, or buy the book on amazon
