Reflexology

Reflexology
Linda Martin, ITEC, CIBTAC Holistic Massage, Sports
Massage, Dip Reflexology

A natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands and ears and their referral areas within zone related areas, which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes, the feet being the primary area of application, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and helps promote the natural function of the related areas of the body. The benefits may include feelings of relaxation, calmness, and rejuvenation.

Acupunture & Physical Therapy for Exam Destress programme

Acupuncture,  Shiatsu, Neuromuscular therapy (NMT) & Seated massage

Michael Herron is a physical therapist and acupuncturist, who treats soft tissue aches, pains, strains and sprains, everyday niggles and sports injuries.  His services for the distress programme include:

Seated massage, also called chair massage and acupressure massage, targets the back, neck, shoulders, arms and scalp. The client remains fully clothed. It's very effective for people with back and shoulder issues.

Shiatsu is a traditional form of therapy from Japan. It usually takes place on a mat at ground level. By balancing the flow of energy in the meridians, Shiatsu can relieve many conditions, help prevent the build-up of stress, and restore vitality and well-being. Literally translated as 'finger pressure’, Shiatsu uses comfortable pressure from the thumbs and palms applied to the energy channels and points in the body. Given through loose, comfortable clothing, Shiatsu may also include gentle stretches and rotations of the limbs and joints.

Acupuncture involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the skin – or applying various other techniques to the acupuncture points – to restore balance and encourage the body to heal itself. Scientific studies have shown the potential for acupuncture to be effective in treating many disorders. Acupuncture dates back 2500 year to ancient China and is practiced alongside western medicine in hospitals throughout modern China.  Please note that this treatment is only available for 60 minute sessions

Neuromuscular therapy (NMT) is a physical (or manual) therapy specialising in the treatment of soft tissue pain and injury. NMT is innovative in that it combines the best selection of soft tissue treatment from deep tissue massage to manipulation techniques developed by the last century pioneers in osteopathy, chiropractic, naturopathy, and trigger point therapy.

Exam De-stress Tips

 Exam de-stress tips!

Sleep Well: Get 6 to 8 hours, at least on most nights, and you will be able to concentrate better, recall in-formation, and keep up your energy levels
Eat Well: Don’t skip meals, especially breakfast. Eat 5 or 6 smaller meals instead of 3 bigger ones. Pack a piece of fruit, a handful of nuts, or some cheese and crackers as a healthy snack.
Drink Water: Staying hydrated helps to keep you alert. Avoid too many energy drinks or other caffeine-laced beverages, as caffeine impairs your study ability, makes you jittery and interferes with sleep.
Take Rest Breaks: Taking rest breaks during times of high mental stress enhances your energy levels and your ability to concentrate and retain vital information. Get up, stretch your body, walk around, go outside to re-oxygenate yourself and grab a drink.
Move Your Body: Exercise is vital at any time, but especially during exams. Just 15 minutes of physical activity will help to keep you alert, calm and focused. Take a short walk along the river!
Learn Relaxation: Find a technique you like, such as guided imagery or progressive muscle relaxation, and practice it  so you will be able to use it when needed during an exam or any other time (pick up the 'Mini Relaxations' handout in the Wellness Centre)
Think Positively!: You can do this!
