Galway Protest / Active Citizenship

Being good neighbours means standing up for the more vulnerable men, women and children in our community. Many in Galway were shocked to learn of the threatened closure of Lisbrook House, the largest asylum-seeker accommodation centre in Galway.

Despite having experienced considerable trauma in their lives - including persecution, torture and rape - the families in Lisbrook House have built strong links with the wider Galway community, not least through the children attending Galway Schools.

The residents are now threatened with being dispersed to other parts of Ireland, destroying the links they have forged - links that have help individuals begin the process of recovering from trauma. After protests by residents and supporters the closure has for the moment been suspended. But it is still a very real threat. A rally in support of the Lisbrook residents will begin at 1pm in Eyre Square this Saturday.

As well as our neighbours we need to look after our environment. The greensodlandtrust will be holding an evening of storytelling and drama this Saturday in Galway Rowing Club. Go along and help conserve land in Ireland.
